The British chieftain Main Battle Tank - designed as a replacement for the Centurion in the late 1950s - was perhaps the best battle tank in the service of NATO in the 1960s and 1970s. Its 120mm cannon and advanced armor made it one of the most impressive tanks of its time. Although it was intended to fight Soviet armor in the plains of Northern Germany, the chief performed his greatest battles in the heat and sand of the Middle East during the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s and proved to be very effective during the 1991 Gulf War.
